他拎著黑色塑料垃圾袋，沉甸甸地走進市中心人群裡。中午的太陽正好鑲在兩棟高樓之間，日光落下，柏油路炙熱，他骯髒赤裸的腳板卻不覺得滾燙。
他走到一座商場前的空地，放下垃圾袋，站定，然後掏出被壓扁的菸盒子，仔細掐起一支菸，叼在嘴角點燃。
身後的行人交通燈閃了閃，轉成了綠色。斑馬線兩旁的人潮開始游動，由島至島，各自混入彼岸的建築、攤位、人群裡。
人，都是人。墨鏡、口紅、皮鞋、高跟鞋、襯衫、西裝褲、迷你裙、套裝，各式打扮的人穿透他單薄的身子，沒人理會像他這樣，穿破舊夾克，披頭散髮，嘴叼香菸的中年男人。
流浪漢在這座城市裡並不是奇怪的族裔。
一個月以前，也是這片空地，他撐起陽傘，擺了攤子，散賣書報。那時候也沒人特別關顧他，可他並不在意，就只是躲在遮陽傘綻開的陰影裡，翻閱那些待售的舊小說。直至某個，像今天這般悶熱的下午，幾個身著雪白制服的壯大官員才突然閃進他的陰影裡，將攤位上的書報掃進紙箱和垃圾袋中。
大學的學費沒繳，他自動休學，那些舊書報是全部身家。他起身制止，伸出手想將箱子裡的書抽出來，但還沒來得及碰觸書脊，就被其中一個官員打在地上。
沒有說話的機會，拳頭如雨落下。
最後，遮陽傘下只剩下兩張空蕩蕩的塑料桌子，受傷的他，以及那本正在閱讀，卻被踩得稀爛的小說。
他突然發現眼前站著一個巡警。漆黑制服，手抱在胸前，直直盯著他。他避開巡警的目光，繼續抽菸。
靠近商場的玻璃大門旁，設一個促銷攤位。迷你裙女孩拿著麥克風，正介紹一款新穎智能手機。女孩身旁有個人裝扮成小丑，免費派送卡通造型氣球。小丑雪白的皮膚背後，有一雙通紅眼睛。他不知道為什麼，就是知道。
一個婦女牽著女兒從簇擁的人群裡走出來。女兒手上拿著氣球，踱輕快腳步，遠遠看見他，就向他揮一揮手中的氣球，裂開雪白的牙齒開心燦笑。
他也笑了笑，不是刻意的。
巡警依舊盯著他。
他深深吸了口菸，一邊吐氣，一邊將還剩一半的香菸彈在地上，用腳踩熄。接著，彎身扯開那黑色垃圾袋，從裡面提起一桶沉重的液體。他將桶子舉到胸前，乾淨利落地將蓋子旋開，湊近鼻子聞了聞。
日光還在頭頂，他覺得熱了。那部被踩得稀爛的小說，裡邊的主角，就是在這樣的天氣裡誤殺了一個人。但他沒有繼續回想小說未完的情節，就舉起桶子，將裡面的液體傾倒在身上，沖出一陣濃厚的火水味兒。
這時候，行人們開始圍簇在他身前，手持相機與手機。而那巡警早將頭上的帽子摘下，背著手拿著，遠遠離開了。
他遊目四顧，輕輕嘆了口氣。
他又掐出一根香煙，叼在嘴上，掏出打火機湊近，嘶、嘶、嘶，點燃。
